Welcome to Village 3!

This cosplay photoset experiments with presenting these standalone images, reimagined as a rural relocation campaign, inspired by Hideaki Anno’s anime series: Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The Goal

Using a character inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion, the goal was to make this work feel both grounded and immersive, allowing audiences unfamiliar with the source material to engage with it as a believable self-contained narrative.

Four pages were mocked up, in the style of magazine/pamphlet spreads, filled with information that fans of the series would be able to enjoy.

Let’s Learn Japanese!

As majority of the photo set was in Japanese, the experience to fully enjoy the photoset was limited to viewers were literate in Japanese.

The solution was to design some language tracts in the form of homework to help translate these passages of text.

These spreads were visually inspired by language textbooks and high school learning materials and aimed to exist in the same universe as the photoset.

The result

As with most of my photography work, I wanted to push my photography beyond just “nice images” and treat it like a piece of communication design.

The result sits somewhere between photography, editorial design and word-building.
